Black Rifle Coffee Subscription Review: Coffee for America

There are quite a few veteran-owned coffee businesses out there, but maybe one of the most popular is Black Rifle Coffee Company. BRCC serves high-quality small-batch coffee to customers who love America, supporting veterans, law enforcement, and first responders in their efforts.

Aside from their goal of representing American culture, they also offer some pretty delicious coffee that’s as strong as their values. They have a variety of roasts available, but you’ll find that almost each has a bold statement to it.

Together, they strive to create a workspace that gives back to charities with each purchase. They also make a difference by working towards the goal of hiring 10,000 veterans and providing entrepreneurship opportunities to service members who are leaving the military. Every part of their business is run by men and women who have a strong work ethic and values that honor those who protect, defend, and support America.

Black Rifle Coffee Subscription Review

When I got a box in the mail from Black Rifle Coffee that included two different 12-ounce bags of beans, I was very excited to give them a try. They also sent me a separate box that was a part of their Exclusive Coffee Subscription, featuring a bag of their newest specialty micro lot coffee and a free high-quality sticker design.

Just Black

Black Rifle Coffee Just Black

In the first box from BRCC was one of their best medium roast options, Just Black. This is their flagship coffee, a perfect middle ground between dark and light and a well-developed balance between bold and smooth.

This coffee is said to have an aroma of cocoa and vanilla and a flavor profile that features bold notes and a smooth buttery finish. Upon brewing up my own cup using a French press, I found that it held a deep and rich smell with an underlying sweetness.

Overall, it was a warm invitation to the brew, which was strong and bold. It had a base of cocoa notes that was interlaced with the vanilla sweetness. Just Black is smooth, delicious, and perfect for a classic cup of coffee.

Freedom Fuel

The next bag of beans that came in the first box from Black Rifle Coffee was Freedom Fuel. This is one of their dark roast coffees that ranks at an 8 on their roast scale of 1-10. It’s full of bold flavors of dark chocolate, walnut, and anise, though you’ll find it lacks bitterness.

I used my French press once again to brew this dark coffee and was met with an aroma that was nutty, dark, and had a slight spice to it. From the smell alone, I could tell this was definitely going to be a bold brew.

Freedom Fuel had a pretty strong taste that was rich, nutty, and chocolatey. It held an underlying sweet spice and I would say that this is a brew that would have no problem waking you up in the morning.

Gothic Serpent

The last coffee that was sent to me to review was the Gothic Serpent, which came in a separate box since it’s the newest featured micro lot in their Exclusive Coffee Subscription. We’ll talk more about this service in a bit, but for now, let’s focus on Microlot No. 49 – Gothic Serpent.

This exotic coffee is October’s pick and commemorates Operation Gothic Serpent, which took place 30 years ago on October 3rd, 1993. Each bag of coffee from BRCC tells a story of the country’s history and veteran service, which you can find on their website or on the provided informational sheet sent along with this subscription.

It also came along with an exclusively designed sticker with the logo that’s seen on the bag. The Gothic Serpent coffee originates from Burundi in the region of Inyambo. This washed processed coffee has tasting notes of red fruits, honey, and citrus, as well as a red currant aroma. It’s grown at an altitude of 1,500 masl and scores at 86.5

I decided to use the suggested pour-over recipe when brewing up a cup, which was honestly a great way to go. The aroma was bright and sweet with a hint of acidic tartness. This carried on through the brew, which was sweet, delicious, and smooth. It had the perfect amount of complementing bright acidity.

Having tried a few different coffees from BRCC during this review and in the past, I can definitely say that this is one of my favorites. As someone who typically prefers this brewing method, I can also say that it’s probably one of the most delicious pour-overs I’ve had. You can really tell that this is a true specialty coffee.

There are a few different ways that you can subscribe to Black Rifle Coffee, the most simple being the Coffee Club Subscription. You can start out by choosing which roast you want to be subscribed to, how much of it you want, whether you want it in pre-ground format, whole bean, or coffee pods, and how often you want it.

The 12-ounce bags come in quantity options of one to four bags per shipment, with deliveries ranging from every two weeks to every two months. Of course, there is always the Exclusive Coffee Subscription option, which is what the Gothic Serpent coffee above was featured in.

This service consists of exotic micro-lot coffees that are rare and have limited supply. Evan Hafer, the founder of BRCC, selects each month’s pick from the best sustainable farms and opens a small number of spots each month for people to subscribe. You can join a waitlist for this subscription for a chance to try the newest specialty selection.

The 12-ounce bags of unique coffees are sent out only once a month and you can only get up to two bags per order. From my own experience, I have to say that this is a great subscription choice because you get to try something new and unique every month.

Black Rifle Coffee: Roasting

Evan Hafer and the rest of the Black Rifle Coffee Company spend a good amount of time looking for the perfect beans to roast. They only select the highest quality coffee, which is shipped right from the farms to the BRCC roasteries.

The green beans are inspected for quality assurance and then quickly moved along to their Burns B270R roasters. These specialty machines can roast 100-270 pounds of beans in 3-15 minutes. Black Rifle roasts five days a week, following each roast profile carefully.

Once done, they are safely packaged into bags that are pumped full of nitrogen and sealed to ensure no moisture can get in. Delivering from roasting facilities in Tennessee and Utah means making sure each bag of beans is as fresh as it can be when arriving at your door.

Black Rifle Coffee: Pricing

At the time of writing, you can get a Coffee Club Subscription of pretty much any roast of your choosing for just $15.99 a bag. However, the Organic Coffee selection runs for $18.99 a bag and the Murdered Out coffee runs for $16.99.

The more bags you get in each shipment, the more you save. Two bags get you 5% off, three bags get you 10% off, and four bags get you 15% off. You can also enjoy free shipping, get special discounted pricing, and even have access to some specialty products and other discounts once you become a member.

If you were looking more towards the Exclusive Coffee Subscription, you’d pay $27 for a bag each month. This increased price is due to the exotic selections included in this service, which are so delicious that they honestly make it all worth it.

What Makes Black Rifle Coffee Unique

At the forefront of what makes Black Rifle Coffee unique is its company’s mission and values. They work hard to create a space that delivers quality coffee to those who support and defend America.

Their premium coffee is imported from around the world and roasted fresh for customers. There are a variety of roasts available on their website, but there’s a level of bold goodness in all of them.

The “support of the veteran and first responder community is at the core of [their] company mission,” so they also make sure to give back to charitable organizations and offer job/business opportunities to service members.

How to Cancel Black Rifle Coffee

You can make changes to your Black Rifle Coffee subscription at any time by logging into your account on their website and selecting the “Edit” option under “Manage Subscriptions.” There, you can change things like which coffee you’re subscribed to, how often you get it, and how much of it you get.

If you’ve decided the subscription is no longer for you, you can always cancel your service by choosing the “Cancel Subscription” option under the same portal.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Black Rifle Coffee Company is a great place to get a coffee subscription service, whether you’re looking for exotic and unique bean selections, such as what’s offered in the Exclusive Coffee Subscription, or a simple and strong bag that’ll get you through the day-to-day.

With each bag purchased, you’re helping BRCC give back to good causes that support America and the people who serve it. That being said, Black Rifle is as much about the quality coffee as it is about the strong culture.
