The order that I received from Equator Coffees came in a nice little box, which held a beautifully designed bag of their Jaguar Espresso beans. I was very happy to get the chance to try out some of their espresso, as it looked like it could make for some interesting beverages.

Jaguar Espresso Fair Trade Organic
The Jaguar Espresso from Equator is a blend of organic and Fair Trade-certified coffees with origins in Peru, Ethiopia, and Sumatra.
The base of this espresso is a fully washed coffee from La Prosperidad de Chirinos in Peru, but it’s blended with a complex dry processed coffee from the Kayon Mountain Estate in Southern Guji, Ethiopia, and a wet-hulled coffee from the Ketiara Cooperative in Sumatra.

The addition of Ethiopian coffee creates the flavors of berries and bittersweet chocolate, while the Sumatra coffee adds to the blend’s body and flavors of spice.
Overall, the Jaguar Espresso has tasting notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, baking spices, apricot, and hazelnut.

This is a complex blend that is actually the darkest espresso roast that Equator Coffees offers. It’s grown at a mixed altitude of 4,000-7,380 feet and all of its components are both Fair Trade and Organic certified.

When I opened my bag of Jaguar Espresso to get to brewing, I noticed that the aroma held a very potent smell of citrus with a slightly nutty undertone. This carried on through the brew, which turned out to actually make for a great espresso shot!

It was a well-balanced shot of chocolatey, nutty, and citrusy-tasting notes. There was a tang of acidity, but it was smoothed out by the nice, chocolatey finish.
Overall this was a sweet and delicious shot of espresso that held its richness when I paired it with some steamed milk.

Equator Coffees: Subscription Options
There are several different options when it comes to subscribing to Equator Coffees.
The service offers five curated subscription options, including the Curated Blend Subscription, Curated Espresso Subscription, Curated Fair Trade Organic Subscription, Curated Single Origin Subscription, and Seasonal Blend Subscription.
They also allow you to subscribe to any coffee blend of your choice if you already know what you love. Whatever you decide to subscribe to, you can pick whether you want it sent to you as whole bean or for a specific grind option, as well as a bag size of either 12 ounces or 2 pounds. 5-pound bags are also available for certain coffees.
Equator Coffees will tell you that their most popular subscription is their Equator Blend, a smooth and complex medium-dark roast full of some of the best growing regions.
No matter what you settle on though, subscribing to Equator allows you to save up to 30% on your first delivery.
The best thing is that you can choose how often you want the freshly roasted coffee beans delivered to you, with frequencies varying from every week to every eight weeks.
Equator Coffees: Roasting
Equator Coffees’ roasting is done in small batches at their roastery in San Rafael, California. Their Head Roaster, Michelle Fleming, works hard to ensure the perfection of all their roast profiles.
All of Equator’s coffees are responsibly sourced from around the world through well-developed relationships with producers. They have a transparent supply chain, which helps farmers and producers.
Equator is certified through Fair Trade USA, USDA Organic, B Corp, and the Regenerative Organic Alliance. Sustainability and responsible farming are maintained throughout the sourcing process.
When it comes to roasting at Equator, they make sure that the unique flavors of all their coffees are brought out while still remaining sustainable through the use of energy-efficient Loring Smart Roasters, which reduce carbon emissions.
