There are a couple of huge names in the coffee industry and, while we aren’t talking about Starbucks here, you’ll be surprised to find that the coffee powerhouse got its roots from Peet’s Coffee, another big-name coffee company.
Peet’s Coffee is not only well-known for its delicious beans and careful roasting practices, but also for the extra steps it takes to provide truly sustainable coffee in a way that leaves a positive impact on the world as they farm, source, and produce the beans.

Peet’s Coffee Subscription: Company History/Overview
Peet’s Coffee got its name and start from Alfred Peet, who learned everything about coffee from his father’s business in the 1930s. He works to introduce the world to dark-roasted Indonesian beans and soon starts his own business in April of 1966.
The first Peet’s Coffee store was located in Berkeley, California and, here, Alfred only used high-quality beans that are roasted in a system that gets the beans to a dark but sweet roast. In 1971, the three entrepreneurs who eventually started the global chain of Starbucks actually learned how to roast beans from Alfred Peet.
The company has now been crafting delicious coffee for over fifty years and they work hard to not only provide some of the freshest beans but to sustainably do so through things such as an Enveritas verification process, which ensures a better environment for their coffee producers as well as the world as a whole.

In the box that Peet’s Coffee sent to me, there was a single 16-ounce bag of one of their dark roasts, Sumatra Batak. This is a Limited Release coffee, so it’s not always available, but it does give you a pretty good look into exactly what Peet’s has to offer.

Sumatra Batak
The Sumatra Batak is a single-origin dark roast from Lintong, Sumatra. It’s wet-hulled in a process called Giling Basah, which uses multiple steps to hull and dry the beans. This gives them tropical flavors and delicious spice.

With a medium brightness and a full body, this coffee is solely produced by smallholder farmers and is noted to have spiced aromatics and a flavor profile of sweet tobacco, treacle, and teakwood. You end up with a cup of coffee that’s sweet, complex, rich, and delicious.

Upon brewing up some of this dark roast, I found that the aroma really was sweet and spiced. It was an intriguing and comforting fragrance that’s woodsy, delicious, warm, and leaves you curious about the brew.

This coffee was warm, rich, and inviting. You can really taste the unique notes of earthy teakwood, smoky tobacco, and just a touch of sweet treacle. They all complement each other really well. I think this would taste fantastic on a pour-over or even as a cold brew. Overall a great dark roast coffee that’s a true specialty.

Peet’s Coffee: Roasting
The most important part of Peet’s Coffee is how they source and roast their beans. They have connections with some of the best coffee-growing regions in the world, where they respect both the farmers and the environment through sustainable sourcing practices.
By using Enveritas’ verification method, they ensure that the coffee communities are only positively affected. This leaves a high standard for both coffee farms and environmental impact. Peet’s not only pays for the cost of this verification but also works with their coffee farmers to help with training and education.
This verification through Enveritas also helps with water conservation and aims to fix any potential issues, thereby improving coffee production and sourcing. By implementing improvement projects that help to resolve problems, such as deforestation, they are changing the coffee world as a whole.
When it comes to roasting, they take extra care to fine-tune the flavor of every single bean that comes through by perfecting roasts of both blends and single origins. They make sure each batch is extremely fresh by shipping bags out right after they hand-roast them, which takes place Monday through Friday.
Peet’s Coffee: Pricing
The pricing of Peet’s Coffee subscription boxes depends entirely on which coffee or curated series that you purchase. Of course, this varies on the quantity that you choose to receive in each order. So, we’ll give you a little overview on each one here.
The K-Cup Series starts at $9.99 a month, the Signature Blend Series starts at $18.95 a month, the Dark Roast, Medium Roast, and Single Origin Series start at $19.95 a month, the Decaf Series $20.95 a month, the Small Batch Series $21.95 a month, and the Seasonal Essentials Series $22.95 a month.
Now, if you choose to build your own subscription box, the price simply depends on which coffee you subscribe to. Whichever way you choose to get your coffee, you can get 5% off your order if you spend more than $30 and even 10% off if you spend over $50. Plus, free shipping is always guaranteed!
What Makes Peet’s Coffee Unique
There are many ways in which Peet’s Coffee sets itself apart from its competitors. As one of the leading coffee companies in the industry, it’s certainly paved the way for many others. By specializing in dark roasted coffee, there’s no doubting its uniqueness.
However, the important part of what makes Peet’s special is its dedication to sustainable coffee-sourcing practices and its support for coffee farmers. They currently have nearly 39 projects that they are working on to help the coffee farm community.
These include things such as farmer productivity initiatives and clean water access. There are many things that Peet’s does as they “work alongside farmers to offer training and educational opportunities, support farm community initiatives, and invest in coffee plant science.”
Plus, to make sure that the challenges they focus on are actually making an impactful difference, they invest in using Enveritas every year to evaluate the projects that they are working on.
