It’s always interesting to try coffees that are grown under different conditions since this can make such a strong impact on how they taste.
Maybe one of the neatest growing conditions for coffee is in the fertile volcanic soil of high volcanic mountain elevations.
Volcanica Coffee is a company that specializes in exotic coffee that’s grown under these conditions, hence the name. They also carry other specialized coffee beans, such as peaberry coffee.

Volcanica Coffee: Company History/Overview
Volcanica Coffee was founded by husband and wife, Maurice and Diane Contreras, who made trips to their homeland of Costa Rica and eventually realized that they actually preferred the coffee that came from volcanic mountain elevations.
In 2004, they decided to start a coffee company in Suwanee, Georgia under the name of Volcanica Coffee, which is focused on sourcing high-quality single-origin coffee that is grown in higher elevations of about 3,000 feet above sea level.
They strive to educate people about how great coffee can be by sourcing, roasting, and selling exotic coffees from volcanic regions around the world, such as Costa Rica, Hawaii, Jamaica, and more. Volcanica works to provide only the finest quality ingredients from coffees that are grown in mineral-rich soil.
Under the conditions of high elevations, fertile volcanic soil, cooler climate, and moisture from clouds, Volcanica has beans that are denser, sweeter, aromatic, flavorful, and delicious. They have over 150 different exotic coffees, including single-origin, estate, peaberry, decaf, flavored coffees, and more sourced from various regions that offer beautiful flavors.

In the box that I received from Volcanica Coffee, there were three different bags of coffee included. Ethiopian Yirgacheffee Coffee, Kenya Coffee AA, and Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee. Each had rather interesting tasting notes listed and beautifully designed bags.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee
The best Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee dry-processed tends to be medium-bodied, brilliantly acidic and contains rough fruity or winy tones.
The first bag of beans that I tried from Volcanica was the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee. This is a USDA organic coffee that’s Fairtrade and Kosher certified, has a complex origin, and is full of exotic flavors.
The coffee region of Yirgacheffe in southern Ethiopia is one that usually produces floral and fruity Arabica coffees.

This light-medium roast coffee is washed processed, has a pH of 5.0, and includes tasting notes of lemon, blueberry, and blackberry.
From the farm Gedeo Zone, these single-origin beans are grown at an altitude of 2,000 meters and are patio dried.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe has coffee farmers that are part of a special cooperative that has a mission to promote the development of sustainable coffee within Yirgacheffe. This region is also known for its high-quality coffee-growing practices.
The aroma of this coffee was sweet and citrusy, which is just what you would expect from a brew that has lemon and berry notes. It’s certainly an interesting one that almost reminded me of baked goods.

Once I got a taste of this inviting cup, I noticed it was rather light. The berry notes made it sweet and smooth while the lemon note gave it a slight tang of acidity. Overall, this was a nice and very well-balanced cup of coffee.
Kenya Coffee AA
Kenya Coffee AA has a reputation as an unsurpassed top-quality coffee. This meticulously prepared East African coffee is famous for its rich body, pleasant, vibrant acidity, fragrant aroma, and winy aftertaste with overtones of berries and citrus.
The next bag I received from Volcanica Coffee was the Kenya Coffee AA, which is known to be one of the highest-quality coffees.
It’s an East African single-origin that has a rich body, bright acidity, a beautiful aroma, and a wine-like aftertaste. Typically, coffees made with Kenya Coffee AA have very few bitter flavors and rather have a sweet and bright profile to them.

This bag of beans is Kosher and Rainforest Alliance certified, washed processed, sun-dried, comes from the Nyeri Hill Estate farm, has a pH of 4.3, and is shade grown.
It’s a light-medium roast with unique tasting notes of raspberry, cranberry, fresh-cut redwood, and alyssum-like flowers.

Thanks to a significant combination of volcanic terrain, rich soil, topology, mild climate, and seasonal rains, the Kenya Coffee AA is one that stands out among many with high-quality flavor. It’s grown at an altitude of 1,900-2,000 meters in a mountainous region, from a farm that’s known for producing rather exotic coffees.
Upon opening my own bag of Kenyan coffee and beginning to brew, I noticed that it had an intense aroma with a sweet, floral base and a smoky, woody undertone.

The taste of this brew held a slight berry acidity due to the raspberry and cranberry notes but had a nice, smooth finish. It was slightly earthy thanks to the redwood and floral notes, but that’s what made it such an interesting cup. The exotic flavor profile definitely made this one stand out from the crowd!
Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee
Highly prized by connoisseurs for its balance and intensity of flavors such as honey, lemon, and almond, this coffee is a great example of a typical coffee from the region as they tend to be mildly sweet and bright.
The last bag of coffee that I received from Volcanica Coffee was the Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee. This is a single-origin peaberry coffee that’s Kosher and Rainforest Alliance certified, shade-grown at an altitude of 5,200 feet, washed processed, and has a pH of 5.1.

This medium roast is known for being well-balanced, intense, bright, and smooth. It’s grown on the Aquiares Estate farm in the Tres Rios region and has tasting notes that include honey, lemon, and almond.

Peaberry coffees, you might notice, are different from your traditional bean, as they are a mutation of a coffee bean that’s only found in 5% of the crop and manually removed. They usually have a more rich flavor to them and are therefore more sought after.

The aroma of this unique coffee is sweet and nutty, and you can even catch a hint of citrus from the lemon note, which carries on through the brew. Its taste is sweet, mellow, and warm thanks to the honey and almond notes.
Overall, the flavor profile works really well together and provides a nice and comforting cup with a slight acidity.

They’re also dedicated to producing high-quality coffee while remaining a sustainable company that minimizes negative impact on the environment. That’s why they use an industrial high-low-high afterburner, which removes smoke and odor, and cleans harmful byproducts caused by the roasting process.
Thanks to the afterburner, Volcanica can ensure that roasting pollutants are properly removed through the use of clean and natural gas. This means fewer emissions and less of a negative impact on the environment.
Volcanica Coffee: Pricing
The pricing of Volcanica Coffee is, of course, going to depend on what you decide to purchase from the exotic coffee company. However, for a general outlook at the time of writing, let’s look at what the three coffees I reviewed are priced at. This includes two of Volcanica’s most popular subscriptions.
The Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Kenya AA, and Costa Rica Peaberry coffee all start at $19.99 for a 16-ounce bag. But, if you subscribe to a bag of any of these coffees, no matter the delivery frequency, you save 10%. So, each 16-ounce bag would be $17.99.
